Animal domestication has profoundly affected the course of human civilization. Domesticated animals provided a ready supply of food and clothing and also had been used for carrying people and their belongings from place to place which couldn’t be possible without their work. Many species have been domesticated for their potential companionship and a few species for scientific research. Human environment has a great effect on both morphological and behavioral traits of animals. In this sense domestication can be viewed as an evolutionary process and as a developmental phenomenon too.
During the course we discuss the process of animal domestication and its major mechanisms. Besides our major domestic species we talk about many other – mainly avian and mammalian – species, the history of their domestication and utilization and their behavioral biology. |
